JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS (1-5th) (fee)
Helps students with reading comprehension and critical thinking. Encourages children to branch out from what they usually read. The stories typically take 15-20 minutes to read at home, depending on the grade level. The program encourages your student to interpret the stories and ask questions in a relaxed, fun environment. Begins in January and lasts for 8 weekly “book club” meetings during lunch. Bring a bag lunch and discuss a wide range of short stories with your peers.
Students of all reading levels are invited to participate. Students read at least seven titles from a specified book list during the summer. During the first trimester of the school year, students will participate in approximately 10 book studies/book club sessions. During the book club sessions, participating students will work collaboratively to discuss the books and respond to questions about plot, characters, setting, and theme. At the end of the sessions, student teams will compete against one another at the Battle of the books competition.
